"All work and no play
Makes jack a lazy boy"
Work, how ever
interesting it may be, is always burdensome. Games provide us with a chance to
get a break -through in the dull,., dry and drab routine of life. They give us
entertainment as well as exertion. Without sports, life would lose much of its
charm.
Longfellow rightly says: “As turning the logs will make a
dull fire burn, so does change of studies to a dull brain" As a student, I
need sports as much as I need food. The studious task of reading books, writing
answers and memorizing formula renders me mechanical. Sports give me a blessed
break in my studies. "Health is wealth" is an old saying. And sports
keep us healthy. A bookworm, like a silk worm, licks away books and finally the
books lick him away. Youth is a time of energy. S.T, Coleridge, the famous Romantic
poet, describes his youthful potential by saying that his body was:
Like those trim skiffs, unknown of yore
On winding lakes and
rivers wide
That asks no aid of
sail or oar
That fears no spite
of wind or tide
Young boys want to exert power. If they are deprived of a
chance to show animal spirits, they give vent to their potential in wrong ways.
So games must be played in colleges and schools. Girls should not be neglected
here. They may be allowed to play indoor games like badminton, skipping, swimming
etc. Different games impart different skills to the players. “Football is by
power, hockey by trick, cricket by chance" Thus every game gives different
training to the players. In general, all games teach sportsman spirit. The
players learn how to accept challenges, follow rules, obey the captain, and
accept the umpire's or referee's decisions. The players learn how to accept
defeat and digest victory which so much matters in life.
On a larger scale, sports ensure interaction between
different nations, their cultures, languages, dishes, heroes and histories.
Thus players introduce a country in the world. They are the ambassadors of a
country. Sports bring a lot of foreign exchange also. There is a wise saying “All
people are good except those who are idle". Because “An idle mind is the
devil's workshop" a game "teaches through delight" and trains
the youth through healthy competitions.
