SHORT ESSAY ON FRIENDSHIP

Aristotle says, "Man Is a social animal". Hence we see that in the entire crowd of eighteen thousand kinds of creations, man lives in the most organized social manner. Man's life is a life of interdependence and interplay. Man has been created very weak and dependent. In his joys and sorrows, he looks for somebody to share them with him. Joys, when shared, are doubled and sorrows halved. It is therefore said that a friend, is a blessing of God. Poor is not he who has no penny, but he who has no friends. A friendless man is like a tree without leaves. It is also said that one who does not have a friend is either an angel or a devil.

There is a variety of friends. We must make friends with good people. A bad friend is worse than a good enemy. Frances Beacon says, "Friends, like books, must be a few but well chosen". One must be very careful in choosing friend. The best quality of a good friend is his sincerity, love and understanding.

Friends also reflect the personality of a person. They become his introduction. Good friends also increase the Friend’s fame and also reflect the personality of a person. "A man is known by the company he keeps". Emily Bronte, in her poem, "I Am the Only Being" bewails the condition of a friendless girl. She paints a friendless life like a barren land. A life in which joys and woes are not shared with anybody is a life of suffocation and frustration. "Love me or hate me but spare me your indifference" Thus even grievances of friends are valuable. They show that they have some hopes with you. S.T. Coleridge rightly says, "Friendship is a sheltering tree". A tree showers fruits even on those who fling stones on it. A true friendship can sustain only with a spirit of tolerance and forgiveness.
