ARE WE HAPPIER THAN OUR ANCESTORS?

Is Science a blessing or a Curse?
Science means knowledge and knowledge is power. Science has bought a revolution in life. The life of ancient man was full of problems and hardships. He had no proper home, dress, food, water and protection. His standard of living was a little better than that of animals. Diseases were puzzles for him whom he could neither understand nor cure.
Similarly, travelling was a fatal task. A distance of few miles might become a matter of life and death for a traveler. Plough, sow, watering and harvesting were all to be done by hands.
Today, life has become a bed of roses. The scientific machines are more magical than the Flying Carpet and Aladdin’s Lamp. With the click of the mouse, we can be in contact with the entire world through internet. Computer is the best child of science.
In agriculture, there are tractors to plough, machines to sow, combines and threshers and tube wells to help the farmer. Fertilizers and pesticides protect the crops. Fruits and vegetables are available round the year, round the world.
In health department, science has given eyes to the blind, ears to the deaf, limbs to the disable, hearts and kidneys to the needy. Almost every disease is curable. Newton, Einstein, Flemings, Pasture are the heroes of science whom millions of people owe their lives.
Travelling has become a fun. Communication has made man omnipresent. Fax, telegram, telephone, E-mail and mobile phones all together have changed life altogether. World is becoming a global village.
Media has become far more effective than ever. Press, computer composing, scanning, Photostat have resulted in a flood of information.
But it is not all gay. Science has made our life mechanical. Sitting on computer, man himself becomes a machine---- cut off the family like a scientific device.
Science has lugged us into the cat and rat race of material. World War-I and II are the worst marks of science on the history of mankind. Weapons of mass destruction pose the threat of another war that may put an end to all found on earth. “Science never solved a problem without creating ten”.
Who is to blame, Science or Man? Napoleon says, “It’s not gun but man behind the gun who fights”. So, man has misused the power of science. Like any power, science has empowered man like a giant.
It’s good to have a giant’s power, but its bad use it like a giant”. The problem is that man is using science as a weapon. The genius minds of scientists never knew that the evil genius of later years would abuse their inventions like that; power would make man beast. Also the mind using the blessings of science needs to be trained and purified.
“There is nothing good or bad but thinking makes it so”, Shakespeare rightly said.
One good heart is better than all heads put together. So, subjects teaching humans values should be taught if we want to check man’s inhumanity to man.
